Bottom line, we all make mistakes....what makes them really big is when we as individuals try to crucify those who we don't know for gain of our individual causes.

In theory, people run for office to represent the citizens. In order to represent citizens, you have to be willing to answer to them. If asking a question is to “crucify” – you and I have a different take on what crucifixion is.

In other places politicians have a love – hate relationship with the press. In Knox County, citizens got to see many of Tim Hutchison’s good work as sheriff. They got to see the highlights of bringing in the bad guy, buying helicopters and the like. The same paper that covered those stories also covered “Black Wednesday” in the Knox City/County building. That day voters got to see another side of Hutchinson and in this last election, they had the final say in the form of a vote.

It doesn’t matter if the question of “when did you know of the Hatch Act?” was asked and response was; “Some time ago”, “that day” or “no comment” - the question should be asked.

In the end, at a bare minimum, citizens have the right to believe that those entrusted with writing rules, codes, restrictions and laws – know them and can follow them. And it’s the job of the press to let the voting public know whether or not those entrusted are up to the task.

Uh, I just have to ask why someone who had never attended a county commission meeting would run twice for a seat on it? I don't understand people's motivation. How do you know the commission is a good fit for your time and service without attending to see what goes on there?

Also, WW, tell us why he made an exception and went to THIS meeting? If he hadn't gone and taken the oath, I imagine it would have been much more likely for the Democratic process to be honored and the matter moved to the ballot in November. We know from the statement he read that HE already knew. Dollars to donuts some of the others knew as well. But left as it was, thanks to Carter, the Republican commission could make sure the resignation wasn't accepted in time to add the matter to the ballot. If they knew what was going to transpire in the days leading up to that first meeting, nothing would have prevented them from adding "declaring a vacancy" to the agenda or even adding a separate "called meeting."

If the USPS does as good a job of explaining the Hatch Act as they say they do, the incumbent should have simply been unopposed on the ballot - which, as it turns out, he actually was.

Either way, the public trust was violated and the very first campaign promise was broken: the promise to serve.

Linda, you are so funny. Someone who had never attended a commission meeting, never attended a republican function until he run for office, Someone "new" to the fray....out of everyone I thought you would have given a benefit of the doubt. So tell me, is your group registered as a PAC? Do you all spend money trying to influence voting of the public or the commission? Let's see what the election laws say about that.
